Career profile

  • I qualified as an occupational therapist in 1981 gaining a diploma with credit from Dorset House, Oxford.
  • I have worked in the following settings: general psychiatry, community OT both with social services and NHS primary care, stroke unit, elderly care, trauma and orthopaedics, independent practice.
  • I have over 30 years experience of working with a variety of client groups including children but primarily with adults who have a physical disability.

 

Personal attributes and experience

  • I have set up a new occupational therapy service in a private hospital which has enabled them to accept a wider range of patients for surgery, rehabilitation and assessment.
  • I am experienced at assessing the care needs of patients to enable safe discharge from hospital or care home.
  • I am experienced in liaison with medical consultants, nursing and therapy staff and both private and statutory care agencies.
  • I am used to assessing the needs of individuals in the following settings: home environment, hospital, care homes, prison, schools.
  • I am experienced in making recommendations regarding the care needs of individuals and specialist equipment they may require.
  • I have a wide range of experience enables me to make accurate assessment of housing needs and advise on adaptations to the home environment.
  • As an independent OT my clients have included: the BMI group of private hospitals (Netcare), The Droitwich Knee Clinic, The Joint Clinic, (Droitwich), Herefordshire Primary Care Trust, Worcestershire Social Services, the Alpha group of hospitals, Age UK, solicitors and case management companies and private individuals.
  • I am an inclusive design advisor for the Civic Trust regarding the suitability of building schemes nominated for Trust awards.
  • I have worked as a facilitator on behalf of the Worcester Association of Carers for the national 'caring with confidence' programme.
  • I carry out manual handling training sessions for care staff on behalf of Worcester Age UK and the local authority.
  • I have personal experience of setting up and monitoring a care package for a close relative.
  • I am professional and meticulous in my approach to work. 

Experience in the following areas

  • TRAUMA AND ORTHOPAEDICS including total hip and knee replacement, shoulder replacement, fractures, head injury, elbow and hand surgery, spinal surgery, amputation. Particular experience with wide range of knee surgery and subsequent rehabilitation.
  • ARTHRITIS
  • NEUROLOGY including Multiple Sclerosis, Frederick’s Ataxia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease.
  • CONGENITAL PROBLEMS including Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy.
  • MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE: following acute illness.
  • Bladder and bowel injury
  • The needs of LEARNING DISABLED individuals who also have physical health difficulties.
  • The needs of clients with HEAD INJURIES.
  • Sequelae of infection following surgery. Eg MRSA, compartment syndrome, two stage joint revision.
  • My experience as a homoeopath has widened my knowledge of both physical and emotional problems, in particular chronic pain, depression and anxiety.
  • My training and experience as an OT has given me a good understanding of psychiatric disorders.
